Activity is Not Exercise

Yesterday morning I overslept an hour (I would blame a party I went to on Saturday night, except the only one who made the decision to stay out late is the guy in the mirror) and missed my 5 am ride; instead I rode late in the day when it was hot, hot, hot–which was fine, if short.

In between, I went out to volunteer at an emergency animal shelter with some of my buddies. Unfortunately, while we were walking the dogs, one got out of her collar and ran away. She came back the next day, but I spent over an hour in the sun looking for her, probably walking a few miles in the process, going through some serious brush in some significant heat.

Lots of folks would consider the walk exercise, but I don’t.

While activity, as far as dealing with blood sugar, is better than nothing, it’s not exercise. Exercise is specifically for exerting your muscles and cardiovascular system–and in my book, it’s not meant to be easy. Sure, activity is great, but exercise is better–and they’re not the same.
