Basketball is Fun, But…

I used to play basketball very regularly when I was younger. I gave it up a few years ago because while I loved being part of a team and competing, I didn’t like being injured.

No matter what the theory is, basketball is a contact sport, particularly for someone like me. In basketball terminology, I’m a “power forward”, also known as a four. A four’s duty in basketball life is the dirty work that most folks don’t like to do, but helps the team win: setting screens (“picks”), defending, rebounding, throwing outlet passes.

Notice that list doesn’t have “handling the ball” in it. Or “shooting”.

My suspicion is that almost everyone who is a four is that way because they’re slow, overweight, and can’t shoot well. Which was my case.

In any event, this weekend was #tweeball, a Twitter basketball gathering, which was filled with mostly middle aged guys who’ve not played all that regularly for awhile. I decided to play.

And subsequently injured myself. Oh well.

I’ll be okay. I just need to be okay pretty quickly, because the century is coming up.
