My Story, Part Sixty Four

I’m recovered–but my bike hasn’t. It’s more than a week after the century ride finished and I still haven’t changed the tube on the rear tire of my Bianchi. It’s flat as a pancake. I flatted around mile 78, changed the tube, but probably pinched the replacement when I did and could only inflate it a bit due to having the frame pump and not a floor pump available. I thought I would have a floor pump at the 80 mile aid station but… there was no 80 mile aid station. Instead, there was an 80 mile restroom/tap water fill station. I waited until I hit mile 90 instead to use a floor pump there, which got me to the end.

I was out for many hours, more than eight hours this year. I was close to having heat stroke (again), despite my many attempts to stave it off. Those efforts included dousing myself with water, applying and reapplying sunblock, and drinking, drinking, drinking–both water and G2.

I felt nauseous for the next 48 or so hours but didn’t actually throw up. I followed what isn’t the best diet for a diabetic–lots of salt and carbohydrate–but is pretty easy to keep down.

As of Thursday I was able to do a short (1.5 mile) run without pain, but I really wasn’t feeling loose until Saturday.

Yet, while I’ve recovered, my bike still hasn’t.

I’ll work on that flat this weekend sometime.
