Dear Walkers in the Bike Lane

Dear walkers in the bike lane,

I am more than happy to share the bike lane with you folks; in fact, for the most part, I will let you own it, because with rare exception (for instance, most of Kalani’ana’ole Highway), bike lanes on this island are absolutely atrocious. The ones in Waimanalo (where I believe I’ll be spending some time Sunday morning) and around Kapi’olani Park are particularly poorly maintained, and the one along Nimitz Highway runs along a number of homeless campsites.

However, if you are going to take me up on my offer, please, please, please stay to the right of the path. Walking alongside each other is nice if you’re a couple, I’m sure, hand in hand, but taking up the whole path obliviously while I decrease my speed to less than three miles an hour makes me experience less than optimal training as well as less than pleasant thoughts about walkers.

Sincerely,

Ryan M. Suenaga, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
