Before and After
I don’t talk a lot about glucose testing here. It’s not fun. It hurts. And it’s a chore even if you don’t mind the prick of your finger as many as five times–or more– every day.
But there’s reason to talk about it now–to look at some of the very clear ways exercise helps me as a diabetic.
I often Tweet my blood sugar before and after a workout. For instance, last week Saturday, when I started my ride–after lunch if I recall correctly–it was a way too high 207. After a couple of hours on the bike–rather unpleasant hours because the wind was kicking me in the rear the whole way–my sugar was a much more reasonable 117.
If keeping my sugars reasonable will help extend my life and improve the quality of it in the meantime, doing tests like these can help me stay motivated. Cycling and running have really let me keep my blood sugar a lot closer to normal than they would be otherwise–and avoided increasing my medications. I’ll keep looking at before and after numbers from time to time as a way to keep myself going.
