My Story Part One Hundred Ten

I’m getting serious. Time is running out.

Not for anything but my events next month (that sounded pretty ominous) but I don’t really have a lot of training time left. The Ford Island Bridge Run–10K out and back–is in early April, and the Haleiwa Metric Century is in late April.

I’m feeling like I could do both right now, but I would like to be in a bit better shape, considering that my training hasn’t been the best recently (and neither has my diet).

A couple of weeks ought to help. I’m feeling like I have some great results in my legs ready to come out. Let’s see if I’m correct this time.

Dear Walkers in the Bike Lane

Dear walkers in the bike lane, I am more than happy to share the bike lane with you folks; in fact, for the most part, I will let you own it, because with rare exception (for instance, most of Kalani’ana’ole Highway), bike lanes on this island are absolutely atrocious. The ones in Waimanalo (where I […]

My Story Part One Hundred Nine

I’m getting my energy back. For me, it’s a cycle–when I’m eating well and I’m working out smart, I feel better an better. Then something happens–work, for instance–and I’m on the downside, with all of the energy seemingly sapped out of me. It’s a cycle that works both to my advantage and disadvantage. When things […]

It’s raining. It’s windy. It’s cold. I’m tired. I have reports due. I’m not up to date on my blog. Enough. Excuses, valid or not, are not what’s going to get me into shape to do the Ford Island 10K, the Haleiwa Metric Century, the Livestrong Challenge, or the Honolulu Century. Only working out and […]

I’m dirty and I’m sore, but I’m also feeling satisfied. Spent this Sunday doing a hike and a bike ride after spending Saturday doing a run and a bike ride. I’m not quite where I want to be, but I’m getting there. The funk I was in after my Oakland trip isn’t totally behind me, […]

Making it Up

I’ve been missing some workouts recently. The weather is one of the things I blame, and my crazy schedule is another, but all those are are reasons I don’t get done what I need to get done. What I need to do is make up those times. When I miss an hour ride, it’s not […]

I hate the wind, but I’m still loving the ride. It’s been a really windy week or two–which is mostly, but not always a nice thing, because when there’s no wind here it’s voggy and hot. But the wind has been so strong recently it’s made outdoor exercise a challenge. It’s a challenge I’m taking […]

Training for athletic events–or just trying to get in or maintain shape, period–is full of opportunities to doubt yourself and quit. Every. Single. Day. What’s helpful–to a point–is the support of others. In fact, that’s not just what a training partner is for, that’s what Twitter is for. Since I often Tweet while running(!) and […]

My Story, Part One Hundred Six

There’s no question that I can manage my stress better when I’m working out. The pain between my shoulders lessens considerably when I’m on the bike, in my running shoes, in the pool, or on the weight bench. When I’m not doing those things, it takes me days to just get to the point where […]

Coming Up: Ford Island 10K

Even though I’ve switched my emphasis from running to cycling at this point in the year, the reality is my next organized event isn’t a ride, it’s a run: the Ford Island Bridge 10K. I did this run for the first time a year ago. Ford Island is in the middle of Pearl Harbor and […]
