I admit it: I’m a horrible swimmer. I’m even worse as a swimmer than I am a runner, although I don’t hate swimming like I hate running.
How can I get better? I’ve already gotten quite a bit better than when I started swimming, one of the reasons being the addition of goggles, and another reason being a bit of studying (a book from the library and a few YouTube videos and other Internet sites taught me a bit). But it really comes down to this:
The only way I can get better is by doing it.
I can read and study and visualize all I want, but only by putting on my goggles and shorts and diving in the water can I actually get better.
So I’ll be doing that more and more in the coming weeks.

The morning is the best time to do a bike ride. It’s not hot (yet) and sunrises are their own rewards. But for whatever reasons–I mostly attribute it to outright laziness–I’ve not been able to get my morning rides in like I have in the past. That has to change, and it did this morning. […]

Every so often I try to reinvent myself. That doesn’t mean that I become a different person, just skilled in a different area. A few years ago I decided I wanted to learn how to write computer programs, so I went ahead and did it. I decided not long ago I wanted to try to […]

I’m learning, really, I am. I’m learning that as I get older, stubbornness and will power aren’t always enough to make up for whatever I lack athletically. Last year when I did the century, it was outrageously hot. This is a ride where it usually rains at least a little bit, but not one drop […]

Yesterday morning I overslept an hour (I would blame a party I went to on Saturday night, except the only one who made the decision to stay out late is the guy in the mirror) and missed my 5 am ride; instead I rode late in the day when it was hot, hot, hot–which was […]

I’m running out of time for the century. It’s only a little more than a month away and my training has been sporadic. Part of it is just me sleeping too late, part of it is my other obligations, and part of it is the weather. Those don’t add up to a successful 100 mile […]

Or at least that’s what Time Magazine seems to be claiming in this article. One of the interesting statements in the article was that, “as recently as the 1960s, doctors routinely advised against rigorous exercise.” It appears that for getting and keeping weight down, focusing on nutrition is a better investment in time and energy. […]

It’s really hot. As I write this, there’s a former hurricane bearing down on us here on my island, so I’m concerned I may not get in the workouts I would otherwise. Dealing with weather is an issue for anyone, no matter where they live. I don’t like to ride when it’s wet or rainy, […]

Since I’ve been having such difficulty getting up for five o’clock rides, I’ve been asked why I try to do them. The number one reason is simple: time. Time is the most precious of all commodities, and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Running this blog, my other blog, and with my vocational and personal […]

I’m getting back to where I need to be. I was on the bike for two hours yesterday and a little over two today–the goal today was three but the weather looked like it was deteriorating, so I headed back a bit early. I’m sure I could have made it the three, which would basically […]
