Working Out on the Road

I’m on vacation this week. Some of these posts may be a bit short, but they were written to give you something to read while I’m traveling as well as to continue on our ongoing themes:

I had modest goals during this past trip of a week to Kansas City, hoping only for two runs during the time I was gone.

Unfortunately, even those were not realistic for this short trip. I did take one run into the heat of the Kansas City summer, but that was as much as I could do, given the busy schedule of KansasFest.

One of the disadvantages I was at was not having my usual equipment. I had my running shoes with me, but certainly not my bicycle and other gear. I also had no idea if there was a pool nearby and if it was available, and even if it was I had no transportation to get there.

On the other hand, one of my Apple II buddies and cyclists took an interesting approach–flying into St. Louis and cycling from there to Kansas City on a converted train track. To counter the expenses of flying with his bicycle, he bought one in St. Louis and sold it in K.C.

While I doubt I would do that–bike fit is pretty important to me and if I have issues, I have injuries–but I thought it was a great way to get exercise while traveling.

In particular I’m learning more about my body and my newest activity, swimming, but I’m also learning […]

I’m on vacation, finally, after a really long work stretch of eleven days, a relapse of a cold, and a lot of stress. I still have many things to do before I get on the plane on Monday night, including preparing enough blog posts to make sure I don’t miss any days while I’m on […]

When I Don’t Listen to My Body

When I was talking about pain a few entries back, I tried to be clear that listening to your body–your pain–was important. But there are times when I’ve found it beneficial to not listen to my body. The truth is simple: I’m lazy. It would be really easy for me to sleep in every day […]

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my dad this week. He would have turned 72 earlier this week. My dad was a diabetic, just like me; the big difference (well, me and my dad had a huge amount of differences, but this one just regarding our disease) is that he never knew he […]

There’s a lot of positives to having a routine; believe it or not, it actually helps to manage the stress of life better. Getting up around the same time, eating around the same time and same amount, going to bed around the same time–all of that helps tremendously. So what’s the problem with routine? No, […]

I’m tired. Today I’m finishing up day seven of an eleven day work stretch—that’s correct, I’m working eleven days in a row. This is something that might be meant for younger social workers than me. In addition to that, for six of the past seven days I was on call, 24 hours a day, seven […]
